Spin Polarization

The xtb methods by default cannot properly differentiate between high-spin and low-spin states. This limitation is addressed with the spGFNn-xTB methods, which can be invoked using tblite. It is available since version 6.6.1.

xtb struc.xyz --spinpol --tblite --uhf <Integer>

The spin-polarized GFN methods allow for a fast screening of spin states.

Exercise

As an example, find the lowest spin state of the following iron complex in the gas phase using GFN2-xTB and spGFN2-xTB. Experimentally, a multiplicity of 7 (six unpaired electrons) was found to yield the most stable state.
